Production DesignAkira (1988)

As I originally developed [Akira], I used each issue to build more depth and size into this mammoth city [Neo-Tokyo]. I kept trying to achieve this by creating a variety of situations to stage the graphic storytelling. But with film you get to combine all this into one and I think that it is much more convincing on film than in a serialized comic strip. - director Katsuhiro Otomo; P.D. by Hiroshi Ohno, Yuji Ikehata and Kazuo Ebisawa

To this day, this movie is what I set the standard for all other animated works.

One of my old artist friends. I still care about them, but for some reason they intimidate me. Not like, I’m afraid of them, but it’s more that I can’t be myself around them because it feels like their opinion about me is that I’m beneath them. It’s especially tough since I draw furry art, and…

You shouldn’t feel bad about what you enjoy drawing. I’m in the same situation with some of my friends and it really sucks

Mind you, I don’t draw porn. At least one of these friends does with just about every race in wow but as soon as I draw a clean picture of a furry I’m a pervert who’s into beastiality? How does that even… What?

People will find any reason to make others feel bad about what they like, and any other reason to complain. Ask when if they liked loony toons as a kid! We grew up on shows and cartoons and comics of human/animals that today would be called furries no matter now cartoony. Bugs Bunny dressed in drag and kiss Elmer and whatever that stupid wolf’s name was would howl and pant at sexi HUMAN women and no one will say a thing about it… There’s nothing wrong with liking or drawing furries or furry humanoids. And I love your art

;w;  Awrh… thank  you.

And, yeah, I guess it’s just a thing that happens in the artists communities :/

Someone who looks down on you is not what I consider a friend. You may have to re-asses your relationship with this person objectively. Leave the past where it lies and see how the current ties that bind you guys are. If they are frayed then maybe you both have just grown in different ways, headed in alternate paths. If they are still strong then talk to them about this, confront them with how they are making you feel. But either way, you do something about it. Whether you draw anthro, human, flying scrotums, LEGOs, etc.., there is no need to let someone else dictate your enjoyment.

I’ve received a lot of letters from artists asking to check out their artwork and their blog, and I’ve noticed that a lot of them openly write unhealthy amounts of negative comments about their artwork, it was super depressing, honestly.  :(
Confidence plays a very very important role as an artist, it’s what helps us learn and grow without the constant feeling of doubt and jealousy!  You are a unique individual who must go down your own unique path, and as scary as it sounds, you can’t rely on others to hold your hand all the way through.  You are the only one who can get yourself to where you need to go, and beating up your artwork is not the way!  Trust yourself and your abilities to make a change, and you can do anything!!

Love your art, love yourself!
